Each element speaks to the patience, care, and natural forces required for growth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis piece was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend in February 2023 about corn cultivation, which led me to reflect on memories from Nayarit, Mexico, watching family members work the land, harvest corn, and continue traditions that connect generations through food and land.\u003cem\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"879\" data-end=\"1267\"\u003eCorn, \u003cem data-start=\"885\" data-end=\"894\"\u003eel maíz\u003c\/em\u003e, is the main focal point of this Día de los Muertos calavera. On the left and right sides, you’ll see rain (representing water) and fire (representing heat), symbolizing the balance of rain and sunlight needed for corn to grow. In the eyes are \u003cem data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1147\"\u003eEl Sol\u003c\/em\u003e (the sun) and \u003cem data-start=\"1162\" data-end=\"1171\"\u003eLa Luna\u003c\/em\u003e (the moon), representing the passing of time and the many days it takes for corn to fully grow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1269\" data-end=\"1528\"\u003eAs I worked on this piece, I reminisced about my trips to Nayarit, Mexico. I remember watching my uncles leave my grandparents’ house early in the morning to head into the Sierra, where my grandpa’s brother, mi Tío Manuel, lived and sembraba maíz (grew corn).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1530\" data-end=\"1688\"\u003eAlthough I never visited his land myself, my mom and sister described it as a small cabin surrounded by greenery. Simple, peaceful, and incredibly beautiful.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1690\" data-end=\"1918\"\u003eI also remember when my uncle would return riding \u003cem data-start=\"1740\" data-end=\"1749\"\u003eLa Mula\u003c\/em\u003e (the mule’s name), alongside Chepe, his dog. Tied to la Mula were sacks of dried corn ready for us to begin desgranando los elotes (removing the kernels from the corn).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1920\" data-end=\"2129\"\u003eAfterward, my grandma would soak the kernels to make nixtamal, and we would carry the soaked corn to the local tortillería around the corner, where it would be ground into masa and turned into fresh tortillas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"2131\" data-end=\"2433\"\u003eRemoving the kernels wasn’t easy work, but I loved seeing the large piles of dried corn stored in my aunt’s garage next to my grandparents’ house. To me, it felt like our version of the giant leaf piles seen in movies and TV shows.
